Town & Country DTC currently offers the following classes for the session starting Thursday, Sept 28, 2017.  Classes are all 50 minutes.  Class dates are on the calendar.

Class Descriptions

BEGINNING  – (4 mos. and older)

This class is a foundational skills class. Students are recommended to stay at this class level until the dog is able to accomplish the skills for this level.

Week 1 will be an orientation class where owners come without their dogs.  Instruction with dogs will begin Week 2.

Prerequisites: All students are welcome.

Behaviors Include:

BRING TO CLASS:

  • Lots of small, moist treats
  • Favorite toy & food filled toy such as Kong.
  • Mat (such as a bathmat)
  • Flat collar, martingale or clip harness (no prong, choke or e-collars allowed)
  • 6ft leash (no retractable)

INTERMEDIATE

For graduates of the Beginning class, this class continues foundation skills and introduces tricks.

Prerequisites: Beginning class, previous group training experience or approval of trainer

Behaviors Include:

  • impulse control behaviors such as sit stay and down stay
  • focusing on handler/owner and ignoring distractions
  • sitting politely for petting
  • loose leash walking through a crowd
  • recalls with more distractions
  • greeting a stranger
  • greeting another dog politely
  • supervised separation
  • reviewing CGC test requirements
  • tricks*

NOVICE 1

This class will teach basic foundation skills needed for all competition level classes.  This includes obedience and rally.

Prerequisites: Intermediate or approval of Trainer.

The Novice 1 class builds the foundation for the kind of precision skills that are needed for competitive rally and obedience, as well as for building a strong, responsive relationship with your pet. Using hand targeting, platforms and pivot disks dogs will learn to consistently find an accurate front and heel position, and we will start the process of building the kind of focus and engagement that makes for happy, consistent performances. We will also work on stays; fluency in understanding sit, down and stand positions; and an introduction to jumping.

NOVICE 2 / HEELING

This class will teach beyond basic foundation skills needed for the competition level classes.

Prerequisites: Novice 1 class or approval of trainer.

This class builds on the foundation skills begun in Novice 1 to create a precise and fun foundation for AKC Novice obedience.  Students start to focus on precision heeling, and continue work on accurate heel and front position, with and without the use of platforms/pivot disks. Recalls, sit and stand for exam are also taught, and platforms are used to train stays with increasing distance, duration, and distractions.

      • Lots of small high value treats.
      • Toys for rewards.
      • Mat or crate for settling.
      • Bring if you own these: clicker, platform, foot target and/or pivot bowl.

FigureEightNOVICE 3 (SHOW CLASS)

This class prepares you to compete in AKC Beginning Novice & Novice Obedience.

Prerequisites: Novice 2 class or approval of trainer. If you have questions about this class, send email to trainer.

This class will help you learn the exercises necessary to title in AKC Beginner Novice and Novice Obedience events, along with understanding the regulations and guidelines for these classes.  You will also practice ring preparation skills (includes entry & exercise transitions), groups/stays, and practice clean handling (the way you will look in the competition ring).  These exercises are built upon the skills learned in the Novice 1 and 2 classes.

SKILLS FOR OPEN/UTILITY

This class will teach advanced foundation skills needed for the Open/Utility class.

Prerequisites: Novice 2 class or approval of trainer.  If you have questions about this class, send email to trainer.

This class teaches more advanced foundation skills beyond Novice. In this class, your dog will learn to retrieve and hold any object.  They will learn to send to a target, and directed jumping.  You will work and proof signals (sit/stand/down/come) from a longer distance. Teach your dog scent discrimination.  We will teach positions during motion (e.g. drop on recall, moving stand).

We will cover many of the exercises in all of the Fenzi TEAM levels progression.

BRING TO CLASS:

  • Lots of treats.
  • Toys for rewards.
  • Crate or Mat to settle when not working.
  • If you have them: dumbbell (or other retrieve object), scent articles (can be scent tins, etc), platform, pivot target

OPEN/UTILITY COMBINATION (SHOW CLASS)

This class prepares you to  compete in AKC Open & Utility obedience.

Prerequisites: Advanced Skills or Approval of Trainer. If you have questions about this class, send email to trainer.

This class will help you learn the exercises necessary to title in AKC Open and Utility Obedience events, along with understanding the regulations and guidelines for these classes.  You will also practice groups/stays, and practice clean handling (the way you will look in the competition ring).  These exercises are built upon the skills learned in the Advanced Skills class.

Behaviors Include:

  • Ring entry (optional)
  • Exercise transitions
  • Group Exercises
  • Necessary feedback to build a better foundation

BRING TO CLASS:

  • Lots of treats.
  • Toys for rewards.
  • Crate or Mat to settle when not working.
  • Necessary equipment for Open: dumbbell
  • Necessary equipment for Utility: articles, gloves.  Go-out target (optional)
  • Platform, pivot target (optional)

This class is for students starting out in Rally, as well as those getting ready to compete in all levels of AKC Rally.

Prerequisites: Completion of Novice 1 or approval of Trainer
